Voxel based video games #2019

Good news everyone! Voxel based videogames are spreading and 2020 is going to be an amazing year – here’s my selection of what’s coming next in the Indie game design world (even if some of the games below are already playable). Enjoy this quick selection and feel free to tell me what YOU expect from 2020!

RIVERBOND

Riverbond is a shoot-and-slash dungeon crawler by @cococucumberco that combines a handcrafted adventure with a destructible voxel world. Adventure solo or together with friends with drop-in/out couch co-op, and embark on a heroic campaign to help rid the evil that has befallen the land.

Release : available now on XB1, PS4, PC – Coming to NintendoSwitch in 2019!

My feedback : Dynamic and colorful, can’t wait to play it on Switch!

SMITH AND WINSTON

Smith and Winston is a humorous exploration action shooter by @executionunit. When a strange signal is detected in deep space the Federation orders Smith and Winston to go and investigate. What they find, after a brief nap, is a shattered ring world, aliens and an evil overlord called the VOID.

My feedback : The early access was dope, and they kept improved it! Nervous gameplay with a great dose of humor.

SKIES OF THE PAST

Explore a vast landscape filled with little details. Uncover ancient mechanisms that guide you across the clouded vistas. Soft piano music and the sounds of wind and rain complement your journey. The weather may clear up the horizons for something new to catch your eye.

Release : pre-alpha development. Release Date TBA.

My feedback : huge poetic landscapes all around. Looks so promising!

TEAR DOWN

Prepare the perfect heist in this simulated and fully destructible voxel world. Tear down walls with vehicles or explosives to create shortcuts. Stack objects to reach higher. Use the environment to your advantage in the most creative way you can think of.

Release : TBA / PC. Be sure to wishlist it on Steam!

My feedback : impressive dynamics for a clever game. Don’t rush the level or you may expect a quick death!

UNRAILED!

Unrailed! is a co-op multiplayer game where you have to build your own railway with your friends, crossing infinite procedural generated worlds. Meet the locals, upgrade your train and don’t let it derail!

Release : early access on Steam

My feedback : everything is about co-op… unless you want to battle against your friends in a big train wreck frenzy! Yay!

THE SANDBOX 3D

The Sandbox is a community-driven game ecosystem lying on the blockchain technology that empowers game makers to create, publish, and monetize a myriad of unique experiences on its decentralized platform. Engage with millions of user-created 3D voxel assets and create your own game on a huge multi player map!

My feedback : everything’s in there: making games without code, just focusing on your creation and imagination! Huge potential ahead!

ATLAS

Atlas is an action-rpg with rogue-like elements, by @borderline_vg, where you use your ability to control the ground to fight the enemies and move through procedurally generated worlds. The game revolves around the character of Atlas, going on a quest to understand who he is and what happened to his kind by trying to reach the top of a mountain.

My feedback : the FX and ground controls look unbelievable. A must-try!

TITAN

Create a sprawling industrial city. Compete with the other Great Houses of Titan for resources, territory, and power. Do battle with ships, technology, influence, or the sheer productive power of your factories. Stake your claim to the Industries of Titan in this innovative sim/strategy game!

Release : Coming to Epic Games Store Early Access 2019, other platforms TBD.

My feedback : so SO hyped about it, @Sir_carma and his team made some AAA quality voxels!

SHADOWS OF DOUBT

Shadows of Doubt is a detective stealth game set in a fully-simulated sci-fi metropolis! There’s been a murder and it’s up to you to solve it by any means necessary, with the condition that you keep a low profile. A unique mix of procedural generation and hand-crafted design enables every room of every building to be explored. Citizens go about their lives independent of the player as you watch from the Shadows, in search of crucial information.

My feedback : the WIP renders are just so rich and detailed. Great job Cole!

SPARTAN FIST

Fight your way to fame, fortune and glory in this first-person puncher as you work to retrieve the fabled Spartan Fist. Playing as Emma Jones, a down-and-out detective working to earn her keep, you’ll tap your inner badass as you punch dudes so hard they explode.

My feedback : this one is from 2018 but still – can’t miss the voxel art from Zach Soares!

THE PADRE

Unravel the mystery of a missing cardinal by solving the riddle of a demonic power you did not expect to come upon. Play as the wittiest, pop-culture referencing priest in video game history and face an ultimate game over, if you make the angels cry you a river.

My feedback : this is an UFO in the colored world of cute voxel games. Blood and evil at gate!

FUGL

Soar with the wind as a shape-shifting bird. Explore worlds teeming with life. Discover and morph into hundreds of animal species. Even take a dive underwater. Relax and enjoy the freedom of Fugl. Voxel art by Marco Peschiera!

My feedback : last but not least, a mesmerizing meditative bird flying game from 2017 – I can’t pronounce the title but I can play it for hours!

CLOUDPUNK

In the sprawling cyberpunk city of Nivalis, your first night as a delivery driver for Cloudpunk will see you meet and interact with a diverse cast of humans, AI and androids, each with their own story to tell. A game by Marko Dieckmann and his studio ION LANDS.

My feedback : one of the best surprises from 2019 is about to be revealed. Simply breathtaking 😉

DOT BIG BANG

Dot big bang is a platform to enable people to make their own games, with an object and a game world editor. Share your worlds with friends, and even play together in multiplayer. Works best on tablets and computers, for now. Try it out!

My feedback : this looks so promising – and it’s already playable in pre-alpha!

BLOCKY FARM

Enter the charming world of Blocky Farm where you can take care of cute pets and animals, style them with cool gadgets and get love in return. Manage your lands, deliver goods to the town with the tractor and create friendship with citizens.

Tractor, pets and lots of love. Blocky Farm is vege-friendly. No animal is harmed during gameplay!!

STAXEL

Put down your roots in Staxel as you settle into your new life. It’s your job to fix up, improve and maintain your homestead. Love and care for a variety of adorable animals. Work the fields and tend to your crops, so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour all year round!

Release : ‘Staxel – Sapling Edition’ is now available!

Staxel is set in a voxel-based sandbox world. You can alter your surroundings in any way you like.

THE TOURYST

You are just arriving at the Monument Islands. Want to go swimming? Or rather take a dive into the deep sea? Fancy some surfing? Or will you talk with the strange old tourist and listen what he has to say about these ancient mysterious monuments..
